Custom Crating Services

Standard moving blankets protect most furniture. They don't protect a marble tabletop, a framed oil painting, a glass chandelier, or a server rack. Custom crating builds a wood frame around the exact dimensions of the item so it cannot shift, compress, or contact any surface during transport. Safebound Moving & Storage (USDOT 2900155) builds custom crates on-site or at its West Palm Beach facility before loading day. The company has completed 35,000+ moves with a 4.9-star rating from 2,401 Google reviews. Get a free quote or call 561-510-7191.

What Custom Crating Protects

Custom crates are built for items that blanket-wrapping alone cannot protect. The crate's interior is lined with foam or padding shaped to the item's contours.

Fine art and framed pieces. Paintings, lithographs, and framed photography are crated in flat, mirror-style boxes or full wood crates depending on size and value. Glass is taped in an X pattern before wrapping to hold fragments in place if it cracks. Crates are marked "fragile" and loaded vertically, never flat.

Marble and stone surfaces. Marble tabletops, granite countertops for installation, and stone sculptures weigh significantly more than their size suggests. The crate distributes weight across the base and prevents corner contact. Foam blocks absorb vibration during transport.

Electronics and equipment. Server racks, medical equipment, and high-end AV systems require rigid crating that prevents any lateral movement. Internal foam cutouts hold the equipment in place. Anti-static lining is used for sensitive electronics.

Antiques and heirlooms. Items with irreplaceable value get the most conservative crating. Legs are padded individually, glass panels are separated and wrapped, and hardware is bagged and attached to the crate. The crate travels labeled with handling instructions.

How Safebound's Custom Crating Works

Step 1: Assessment. A coordinator evaluates the item during your walkthrough. Dimensions, weight, fragility, and value determine the crate design. If the item requires specialty handling such as climate sensitivity or orientation restrictions, that's built into the plan.

Step 2: Crate construction. Safebound builds crates from plywood and lumber, sized to the item with 2 to 4 inches of foam clearance on all sides. Crates are built at the West Palm Beach facility or on-site at your home on moving day. On-site construction is common for items too large or fragile to transport uncrated to the shop.

Step 3: Packing and sealing. The item is wrapped in protective material, placed into the crate, and secured with internal bracing. The crate is sealed and labeled with contents, orientation arrows, and handling notes.

Step 4: Loading. Crated items are loaded last and unloaded first to minimize time in the truck. They're secured against the truck wall with straps to prevent shifting during transit.

Custom Crating Rates and Moving Pricing

Custom crating is quoted per item based on dimensions, materials required, and construction complexity. The crating cost is included in your written moving estimate after the walkthrough.

Safebound's standard moving rates for local jobs:

Crew SizeHourly RateMinimum
2 movers$135/hr$540
3 movers$180/hr$720
4 movers$225/hr$900

Every local job includes 3 hours of labor plus 1 travel hour. Long-distance moves with crated items are priced by shipment size and distance. Request a free quote that includes crating costs for your specific items.

When You Need Custom Crating vs. Standard Packing

Not every fragile item needs a crate. Dishes, glassware, and small decor pieces are protected adequately with cell boxes and packing paper. Custom crating is the right choice when the item meets any of these criteria: it's worth more than $500, it has glass or stone surfaces larger than 24 inches, it cannot be replaced, or it weighs more than 75 pounds with a fragile surface.

A good test: if dropping the item from tabletop height onto carpet would cause damage you couldn't repair, it's a crating candidate. If the same drop would cause damage you could fix with touch-up paint or wood glue, standard packing is sufficient.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does custom crating cost for moving?

Custom crating is priced per item based on size, materials, and construction time. A small framed painting may cost $75 to $150 to crate, while a large marble tabletop or oversized artwork can run $300 to $600. Safebound includes crating costs in the written moving estimate after assessing your items during the walkthrough. Call 561-510-7191 for a quote.

Is it worth paying for custom crating?

For items worth more than $500 or items that cannot be replaced, custom crating is the most reliable protection. Standard packing uses blankets and paper, which protect against surface scratches but not against impact or compression. A crate eliminates contact between the item and anything else in the truck. The crating cost is a fraction of the replacement value for fine art, marble, and antiques.

Can Safebound crate items on moving day?

Yes. Safebound builds crates on-site at your home on moving day for items too large or fragile to transport to the shop uncrated. The crew brings lumber, foam, and tools. On-site crating adds time to the move, which is reflected in the hourly labor. For the most efficient schedule, have the coordinator identify crating items during the pre-move walkthrough.

What items need custom crating?

Items that typically require custom crating include framed artwork over 24 inches, marble or granite surfaces, glass tabletops, chandeliers, antique furniture with fragile detail work, server racks, and medical equipment. The common factor is that standard blanket-wrapping cannot prevent damage from impact, vibration, or compression during a move. Safebound's coordinator identifies crating needs during the walkthrough.

Does Safebound carry insurance on crated items?

Safebound carries $750,000 in insurance coverage on every move, including crated items. The standard Released Value Protection covers items at $0.60 per pound. For high-value pieces that justify custom crating, Full Value Protection provides repair or replacement-cost coverage. Discuss valuation options with your coordinator before moving day. USDOT 2900155.

How far in advance should I schedule custom crating?

Schedule the pre-move walkthrough at least 2 weeks before the move date so the coordinator can assess crating needs and source materials. For moves with multiple crating items or oversized pieces, 3 to 4 weeks of advance notice ensures the crates are built and ready before loading day. Call 561-510-7191 to schedule.

Frequently Asked Questions

Don't let unanswered questions hold you back. Let's extinguish those burning questions!

Is my move price guaranteed?

In many cases, yes. Your move price can be guaranteed if your estimate is based on accurate information and the services do not change. Safebound Moving & Storage offers flat-rate and binding estimates designed to give you a clear, predictable cost for your move so you know what to expect before moving day.

A guaranteed price depends on the details provided during the quoting process, including the inventory list, pickup and delivery locations, access conditions, and any additional services such as packing or storage. When this information is correct and the scope of the move stays the same, the price listed on your estimate will not change.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes. Safebound Moving & Storage is fully licensed and insured to perform both local and long-distance moving services. We operate in compliance with state and federal regulations, including registration with the U.S. Department of Transportation for interstate moves. Our licensing allows us to legally transport household goods across state lines and ensures we meet the required safety, insurance, and operating standards for professional moving companies.

In addition to our licensing, we carry the proper insurance coverage to protect your belongings while they are in our care. All moves include basic valuation coverage as required by law, and we also offer additional coverage options for customers who want extra protection for high-value items. Our team will explain these options during the estimate so you can choose the level of protection that best fits your move.

Being licensed and insured is one of the most important things to verify when hiring a moving company, especially for long-distance relocations. Working with a properly registered carrier helps ensure accountability, transparent pricing, and professional handling of your shipment from pickup through delivery.

What services are included in my flat fee?

Our flat-rate pricing is designed to give you a clear, all-inclusive cost for your move with no surprises on moving day. When you receive a flat-fee quote from Safebound Moving & Storage, it is based on the inventory, distance, and services discussed during your estimate, and it includes the labor, transportation, and standard moving materials needed to complete your move.

In most cases, the flat fee includes loading and unloading, transportation, basic furniture protection with padded moving blankets and shrink wrap, disassembly and reassembly of standard furniture, and placement of items in your new home according to your instructions. We also include fuel, mileage, and the use of our moving truck and equipment, so you do not have to worry about hidden charges being added later.

If packing services are included in your quote, the flat fee will also cover the agreed-upon packing labor and materials. If storage is part of the move, the estimate will outline the storage period and any applicable fees in advance so you know exactly what is included.

Because every move is different, your flat fee only covers the services listed on your estimate. Additional items, extra packing, long carries, shuttle service, or changes to the inventory may affect the final price, which is why we take time during the quoting process to make sure your estimate is as accurate as possible. Our goal is to provide straightforward pricing so you know exactly what to expect before your move begins.

Do you handle fragile or valuable items?

Yes. Safebound Moving & Storage has extensive experience handling fragile, high-value, and specialty items, and we take extra precautions to ensure they are packed, transported, and delivered safely. Our crews are trained to properly protect delicate belongings such as glassware, artwork, antiques, mirrors, electronics, marble, sculptures, and other items that require careful handling.

We use professional packing materials including padded moving blankets, shrink wrap, custom boxes, and specialty cartons designed for dishes, TVs, artwork, and other sensitive items. When needed, we can also provide custom crating for especially valuable or oversized pieces to give them additional protection during transport.

For customers with high-value furniture or designer pieces, our team follows detailed packing and loading procedures to prevent damage during both local and long-distance moves. Each item is carefully wrapped, labeled, and secured in the truck to minimize shifting while in transit.

If you have items that you are particularly concerned about, we recommend letting us know in advance so we can plan the proper materials, crew size, and equipment for your move. Our goal is to make sure every item — from everyday household goods to your most valuable possessions — arrives in the same condition it left.
